As her son Doug prepared to play in the Special Olympics National Games, Bellefontaine’s Roxan Casey was concerned about nerves coming into play. But not for Doug.
“I was the one that was really nervous,” she said with a smile. “As long as Doug is playing softball, nothing else seems to bother him.”
Casey, 28, a member of the Logan County Braves softball squad, was at his best at the national games last week in Lincoln, Neb. He pitched in seven of his team’s eight games as Team Ohio rolled to a first-place finish.

“I was a little nervous when I first got on the field, but as soon as I settled in, I was calm and ready to play,” said Casey on Tuesday after his Braves team defeated Miami County 11-1 at Southview Park in Bellefontaine
Team Ohio practiced only three times before taking the field in Nebraska. The squad came together quickly, outscoring its eight opponents 143-28.
In Friday’s championship game, Casey was the winning pitcher as Team Ohio cruised to a 15-1 win over Illinois. He threw a no-hitter earlier in the tournament.
“I was surprised we won,” said Casey. “We played as well as we could have played. We had good defense and I worked well with my teammates.”
Casey’s new prize possession is the gold medal he and his teammates were presented with during the awards ceremony.
“It felt really, really good to get on the podium and get a first-place medal,” he said.
Roxan Casey was one of 10 family members and friends in a local group of supporters who traveled to Nebraska to cheer on Doug.
“It was really exciting,” she said. “We had a ball.
“We never envisioned that they would win it. That was definitely a surprise.”
Although it was a moment Doug Casey said he will long remember, he is happy to be back in Bellefontaine with his local team.
“It feels good to be back home,” he said. “It’s good to be back with my teammates and my friends.”
In Tuesday’s game, Casey didn’t show any signs of being fatigued from his trip. He had three hits, including a double and a three-run home run. He also made several stellar plays at shortstop.
In addition to playing softball, Casey enjoys his longtime role as team manager for the Bellefontaine High School football and boys basketball teams.
