COLUMBUS — Bishop Watterson did to Bellefontaine on Friday what the Chiefs had done to most of their opponents this season. The bigger team in nearly every game this fall, the Chiefs used their size and strength to bully the opposing team. Featuring front lines that heavily outweighed the Chiefs, Watterson was the aggressor Friday as it churned out a 26-0 victory in a Division III regional quarterfinal at Hagely Field. “I thought for the most part we were able to win the battle up front,” said Watterson head coach Dan Bjelac. “In the second half we really started to take control of the line of scrimmage and we played sound fundamental football.
Watterson only outgained Bellefontaine by 46 yards (235-189), but the Eagles took advantage of their scoring opportunities. The Chiefs moved inside the Watterson 25-yard line on two occasions — once in each half — but came up empty each time. “We were able to move the ball at times and we were able to make some things happen, but we had a couple of drives where we hurt ourselves,” said Bellefontaine head coach Jason Brown. “But you have to give Watterson a lot of credit. They have a very good football team.” Taking advantage of good field position, Watterson jumped out to a 12-0 lead at halftime.
“We gave up 12 points, with two of those points on a safety,” said Brown. “For our defense to really only give up 10 points with the field position Watterson had in the first half ... I thought we were in pretty good shape.” The Eagles, who rushed for 147 yards, marched 68 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter to make the score 19-0. Bellefontaine was unable to do much offensively from that point on. For the complete recap of the Chiefs game, pickup a copy of Saturday's Examiner. CLICK HERE to subscribe today! |
