TIPP CITY — Opponents this season had all kinds of trouble against West Liberty-Salem’s offensive attack. Cincinnati Roger Bacon was prepared for it, though, here Saturday.

The Spartans were able to get enough blocks to keep the Tigers from getting into a groove as WL-Salem fell in three games in a Division III district championship volleyball match at Tippecanoe High School.

“They have a very strong defense,” said WL-Salem head coach Susan Middleton. “They are a very solid team.”

Roger Bacon (21-4) won the opening game 25-18 and cruised to a 25-12 win in game two. The Tigers put up a challenge in the third game, but the Spartans pulled out a 25-23 decision to end the match.

With two dominant hitters in senior Paige Parker and sophomore Becka Peterson, the Tigers were able to overpower the opposition to reach the district title game. However, the Spartans were able to answer with a determined defensive approach.

“I told the girls we had to have a good passing game,” said Middleton. “Unfortunately the passes weren’t there all the time and we couldn’t run the quick offense.”
