William R. “Russ” Boone, 91, of Springfield, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on May 22, 2014.
Russ was born on Nov. 19, 1922, to the late Ray and Viola Lee Boone and is also preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.
Russ is survived by his bride of 71 years, Florence Ruth Barnhart Boone; a daughter, Susan, of Arnold, Mo.; a son, Bill, of Springfield; two grandsons, Eric and Kris, of Baltimore, Md.; two great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
He was raised in Bellefontaine where he graduated from high school as a sports star in football and basketball.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S Army Air Corps and became a radio and communications specialist, spending most of WWII in the China-Burma-India Theatre of operations. His military service was one of the things of which he was most proud.
He eventually retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base and was involved in many community activities including serving as mayor of New Carlisle.
Russ attended the Maiden Lane Church of God in Springfield for most of his adult life where he served as an usher and on various boards along with teaching an adult Sunday dchool class. He was also involved for many years in the New Carlisle Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball as commissioner, umpire and coach.
He was a devoted husband and Father and will be sorely missed.
Pastor Mark Martin will officiate a funeral service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson Lytle and Lewis Life Celebration Center where friends may call two hours prior. Burial will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
