Ohio horse track has last race, ends 50-plus years

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A northern Ohio horse track has wrapped up a half-century of harness racing with a crowd of people who turned out to catch a final piece of the action or some of the discounted concessions.

Toledo's Raceway Park posted its final race on Sunday.

Track owner Penn National Gaming is closing the site and opening a new track in Dayton because it wants to reduce the competition for drawing gamblers to its casino in Toledo.

The company also is moving Beulah Park's thoroughbred racing from suburban Columbus to just outside Youngstown, where a new track is under construction.

The new tracks near Youngstown and in Dayton are expected to open next year with racing as well as slots-like video terminals.
