Instead, its sparkling campaign came to a screeching halt Monday in the Division III sectional final at Good Samaritan Field in Brookville.
Upstart Versailles, which went just 9-16 during the regular season and was seeded 11th in the 14-team sectional field, shocked top-seeded WL-Salem 7-1.
It marks the first time since 2003 that WL-Salem will not make it out of the sectional tournament. WL-Salem advanced to the state tourney the last two years and three of the last four.
“We let them get their foot in the door with a couple of errors and they got confidence,” said WL-Salem head coach Lanay Cordell. “They took the momentum and we could not regain it.”
