TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The governor says Ohio is ready to begin taking steps to clean up the toxic water in its largest inland lake.

State regulators say Grand Lake St. Marys in western Ohio is no longer safe for swimmers, boaters or fishing because of toxins from an algae outbreak.

Gov. Ted Strickland on Friday announced a series of short and long term plans, starting with a test project in September to see if a chemical can slow the algae's growth.

The state also will see if it can require large farms to reduce the amount of manure that they put on fields. Phosphorous that feeds the algae comes manure and other sources.

Meanwhile, health officials are investigating whether a handful of illnesses and the deaths of a few dogs are related to the lake water.
